Haseyas New Beginnings Adoption Center in Rayne has took 4 of the 8 dogs from the Crowley Animal Shelter, and they will no longer be under the threat of being euthanized. The other dogs were taken to other safe rescues, and 2 are still at the shelter, one on a court hold, and one deemed aggressive.

A local animal rescue put in a post on Wednesday stating "❌❌❌Crowley Shelter to Euthanize All Dogs Beginning Tomorrow June 10th as new protocol instead of adoptions or rescues!!!❌❌❌...The answer, because their spending too much on dog food. How much are they spending? Well, apparently they have a budget for about 5 bags a month and are using about 8. Meaning that they need 3 more bags of dog food per month ($60). So, instead of writing a grant or letting us try to find donors or any other options, they have decided that they will just kill the dogs - all of the dogs."
EVEN News is working with Haseya's New Beginnings Animal Shelter, located in Rayne, LA, who will be taking the dogs from the Crowley Animal Shelter, to help pay the fee the City of Crowley put in for those saving the dogs ($10)

❌❌❌Crowley Shelter to Euthanize All Dogs Beginning Tomorrow June 10th as new protocol instead of adoptions or rescues!!!❌❌❌ Please comment, share, and tag so this post is seen 🙏🙏🙏 As rescues, we work closely with the shelters in Acadia Parish to get our unwanted community dogs out and on to better lives. We volunteer (meaning we do not receive a single penny) to go to the shelters, take pictures, post dogs, network them to rescues, answer a million questions, donate meds from our own pockets when needed because animal control only provides food, all in the hopes of saving lives. We don't post our names. We don't get glory. We don't receive thanks from the city. We certainly aren't paid. We just do it to help. The shelters, as you know, have limited space. When that space runs out, dogs are put down. We hate it, but we understand it. At City of Crowley Animal Control with our continuous efforts, we have managed to keep them from having to euthanize for a long time now, making sure that they don't fill up and constantly moving dogs out and on to rescue. In fact, since October we have move well over 100 dogs out of the shelter and on to rescues or adoptions. In that same time, only 1 dog was euthanized and it was due to aggression, not space. Yesterday, we received a call to let us know that dogs will now be euthanized when their 10 day hold is up. WHAT?! WHY?! The answer, because their spending too much on dog food. How much are they spending? Well, apparently they have a budget for about 5 bags a month and are using about 8. Meaning that they need 3 more bags of dog food per month ($60). So, instead of writing a grant or letting us try to find donors or any other options, they have decided that they will just kill the dogs - all of the dogs. Well as you can imagine, we were a little upset. We didn't jump on Facebook and start bashing them. We called. We called and left messages for Tony Duhon and Tim Monceaux. Mr. Monceaux actually called back and said they would have a meeting and discuss our concerns and agreed dogs shouldn't die because of a few bags of dog food. In addition, we explained that killing the dogs costs $15 per dog which will only increase what is being spent. It will not help the budget. It is not a solution. Today, we got the results of that meeting. Not only are they still planning to kill the dogs, but now have decided to charge rescues $10 per dog if they want to save them to be paid to City Hall, not the shelter. It will NOT even be used to buy dog food to extend the time for other dogs. They will still die. $10 may not seem like a lot, but for a dog that has been provided nothing but food, the rescue is taking responsibility for medical (broken legs, etc.), neuter/spay, vaccines, transportation costs - everything. That extra $10 will be the difference between a rescue pulling or not when they can pull from another shelter with no extra $10 charge meaning they can save more dogs. Rescues stretch every penny and save as many as they can. Charging them to do it is another nail in the coffin for these dogs. We need help. We need more voices. We need to let them know that this is not okay. We understand that times are hard and cuts are being made wherever possible. This shelter is already at the minimum budget. The only thing they spend on the dogs is for food. It costs less than $10 a month to feed a medium sized dog and instead of that, they are going to spend $15 to kill them. This solution is irresponsible and barbaric and contradictory to the goal. It will not help the budget. It will only increase it. When we have proven that we can move nearly every dog and killing them will only increase costs, it is just killing for the sake of killing. Mahatma Gandhi said, 'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.' Killing all of our animals over 3 bags of food a month when we don't have to is a sad indication of our community. Killing them when it will do the opposite of decreasing the budget and actually cost more is inhumane. We need your voice. Please. Call your city councilman. Call the mayor. Share this far and wide. This starts tomorrow. We need this reversed before it's too late. There are 8 dogs in the shelter today. They will all die starting tomorrow. If you have any contacts that could donate food to alleviate the budget so that the dogs don't have to be put down, please reach out. We are working on whether it would even make a difference and give them time.
