Vehicle strikes bicyclist on road in Lafayette

UPDATE: All roads have been re-opened.

LAFAYETTE, La. (ENN) — Lafayette Police are currently on the scene of a major vehicle crash involving a bicyclist on the 2100 block of NW Evangeline Thruway.

Authorities say they responded to the crash around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

A male operating a bicycle was attempting to cross the 2100 block of NW Evangeline Thruway, near Chalmette Drive, police say. While the bicyclist was attempting to cross the NW Evangeline Thruway westbound, a vehicle traveling southbound in the middle lane of the NW Evangeline Thruway impacted the bicyclist.

The male bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle sustained no injuries.

Currently, the Lafayette Police Department’s Traffic Unit is on scene and conducting the investigation. All southbound lanes of the NW Evangeline Thruway are closed at this time from the Interstate 10 exit ramp to Chalmette Drive. Motorists should avoid this area until further notice.

An update will be provided when more information becomes available, and the roadway has been reopened.
