Police respond to shooting in Rayne, resulting in an exchange of gunfire


RAYNE, LA (EVEN NEWS)- Rayne Police responded to the 1000 block of East Jeff Davis Avenue in Rayne after receiving a call regarding a male firing a weapon in the area on Thursday evening.


Responding officers encountered a suspect with a rifle. The suspect then barricaded himself inside a residence. Assistance was requested from the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T team who arrived on scene along with their mobile command center.


The subject continued rapidly firing the weapon in the area, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the subject. The subject was shot and transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, according to police. No officers were injured in the shooting.


Residents in the area were evacuated during the exchange of gunfire.


As of 2:50am, the investigation was still ongoing and the scene was still roped off. State Police is now conducting the investigation. They ask the public to please utilize alternate routes around the area to allow for the movement of emergency vehicles and investigative personnel.
