One dead in early morning shooting in downtown Lafayette on New Year’s Eve

LAFAYETTE, La (EVEN) - A shooting occurred in downtown Lafayette on early Sunday morning.


At around 1:10 a.m., the Lafayette Police Department responded to the 500 block of Jefferson Street in reference to shots being fired.


When officers in the area arrived on scene, one victim was found lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead on scene.


Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division of LPD, in addition to Crime Scene Investigators, were called to the scene and are actively working to develop leads.


The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be provided when available.
