UPDATE: Pedestrian killed in fatal hit and run Sunday evening on Ambassador Caffery identified
LAFAYETTE, LA - A male pedestrian was fatally hit on the 2600 block of Ambassador Caffery on Sunday evening. Lafayette Police are now searching for the driver of the vehicle that fatally struck the pedestrian, throwing the pedestrian's body into the "grassy" area, then fled the scene. The crash occurred within the hour of 9:00pm on Sunday.
Donald Jackson, 57, of Scott, was found dead at the scene of the crash. Police are still working to determine exactly what happened causing the crash.
While police were working the scene, a woman tried to drive through the scene and run into officers. Dominque Mills, 29, of Carencro, drove around barricades surrounding the crime scene and drove directly at officers. Officers said she was intoxicated at the time.
Mills was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and OWI-second offense.
Police do not know at the time if Mills has any connection with the hit and run.
Green said one officer shot at Mills’ car as it came upon the crime scene in attempt to stop it. The vehicle was not struck by gunfire, and no injuries were reported from the shooting.
The person responsible for the hit and run has yet to be found.
